Data Use, Technology, and Educational Leadership

Shifting the Focus to People

shift

This month’s issue of Principal features this article, which I co-authored with Ann Allwarden (a practicing school principal) and Jeff Wayman (an expert in educational data use, data systems, and a long-time mentor). Although ours can be read online, I highly recommend downloading the PDF– there is just something about the fun of color. Actually, I also recommend subscribing to Principal. It’s a nice way to take a moment to think a little differently about the work of school leadership.

To write this article, we put our heads together to tackle the sticky issue of getting the most out of computer data systems. We see this is a leadership issue, not a technological one. The work is very much about developing a shared sense of vision. Accordingly, we provide some conversation starters that we hope leaders could take their faculties or central offices tomorrow and throughout a school year.
