Got feedback? Working on Sergiovanni’s “Supervision: A Redefinition” (9th edition)

Last year, I was invited to help update Supervision: A RedefinitionTom Sergiovanni and Jerry Starrat have had a long run with this textbook, and it’s a real honor. Something that distinguishes these authors is their emphasis on moral purpose and the “big picture” of education. A lot of teachers (and supervisors) get into education because school is supposed to be uplifting.

Does anyone have feedback or opinions about this book? That might include stuff you wished we’d nuke or stuff you wished we’d talk about. Some of the updates I’ll be doing will involve issues around data-based decision making as they relate to supervision. I’ll be sharing more specific ideas about this in the future, but if you have some now, I’d love to hear them!

    Been thinking about this for a while. One thing I remember about Sergiovanni’s courses at Trinity is that, at the end of the day, the bottom line was people. People, people, people. Kids & parents & teachers living in community and pursuing educational goals. I think if you deal with data in any way other than building a constructive culture in which people learn to trust and engage in (sometimes heartwrenching) collaborative inquiry, it wouldn’t be in the spirit of his take on moral leadership. Accountability was not the end game for him in those courses–it was about engaging head & heart. That can be done well with the assistance of data (or “evidence,” as I’m finding more teachers want to say). But it’s no less about a shared journey just because there are data attached. My two cents, anyway.
